Vittoria Repetto is a subtle poet who has preserved her working class sensibility and her taste for the actual language of daily life while maintaining an acute ear for literary echoes. From the first poem where she places her grandparents young and in love right in front of us, to ’she’s doing the dishes’ where in a tongue in cheek delivery she eroticises a simple household chore to the last poem ‘not just a personal ad,’ Vittoria repetto casts an unapologetically direct and witty eye on life’s complexity. These are poems that paint unforgettable moments within unforgettable scenes.
Vittoria Repetto is a a poet who has published in Mudfish, Earthâs Daughters, Paterson Literary Review, Italian Americana, VIA: Voices in Italian Americana, and in the lesbian web magazine Nest Oâ Vipers. Her work ahs been collected in the anthologies Unsettling America: An Anthology of Contemporary Multicultural Poetry, Identity Lessons: Contemporary Writing about Learning to Be an American, Curaggia: Writing by Women of Italian Descent and Hey Paesan! Writing by Lesbians & Gay Men of Italian Descent. She has published a chapbook entitled Head for the Van Wyck, and has been a finalist in the 1994, 1997, and 1998 Allen Ginsberg Poetry Awards. She currently hosts a Womenâs Poetry Jam w/ Open Mic on the last Tuesday of the month at Bluestockings bookstore. Vittoria repetto is vice president of the Italian American Writers Association.
Since its release in Fall 2006 Vittoria repetto’s first poetry book Not Just A Personal Ad has won accolades; in a Lambda Book Report column, poet and reviewer Rigoberto Gonzalez wrote “Poems of intense sensibility and gorgeous imagery are a rarity these days; but this book of verse by a distinctly working class, distinctly lesbian, and distinctly Italian American voice is a must for all readers of good poetry.â
